Plot
Jazz is a scientist trying to understand the meaning of life, all the while neglecting his wife and child in his pursuit of knowledge. He becomes obsessed with Rat Kings after reading about them in a book, distracting him whenever he attempts to reconnect with his family. (Why?).
With his family no longer keeping him from his experiments, Jazz begins to get more extreme with his obsession, robbing the graves of David Bowie, Flight of the Conchords and Mark Zuckerberg for parts. Using these body parts he begins to conduct Frankenstein-esque experiments. This leads to the creation of the 'A New Thing' elixir. During the experiments a rat falls into the mix, adding its DNA to the potion. Jazz's experiment wakes, a perfect clone of himself. The clone is agressive and knocks Jazz out before taking the elixir and leaving the lab. (The Same Thing).
Shadow Jazz walks the halls, seeing a number of different interesting doors. A number of strangers greet him silently in the halls, wearing golden rat masks.
Shadow Jazz connects with a woman at the club and the two head back to her place. They spend the evening hooking up and engaging in strange kinks (such as dipping elbows in cinnamon or puling nose hairs) with the appearance of another man named 'Little Old Fella'. (I Could Get Into It).
The morning after, Shadow Jazz leaves and finds a greyscale door that is playing classical music. Entering into this world, he finds himself in a perfect greyscale field -and in a new outfit- and falls to his knees in joy. A bird then poos on his shoulder, ruining his mood. Throughout the song, he finds himself in multiple scenarios which he romanticises to make better. Eventually he cracks and begs the world to 'give [him] a break'. He begins to compete with other men in town who are also trying to romanticise life, by being as unique and whimsical as possible.(Romanticise).
Storming back through the hallways, he spots a man looking sad and boring in an office and hatches an idea.
The Fashion Victim wakes up tied to a chair in a dark room, with a high fashion Shadow Jazz and Shadow Ulla insulting him and his sense of style. They then work to make him more fashionable, all while wearing increasingly more ridiculous outfits. They watch the victim awkwardly go up and down the runway in embarrasment and harass him for not knowing certain designers. Eventually Fashion Victim learns to be fashionable, blowing the Shadow clones away. He comes up with the idea of 'cheese shoes', which they immediately love and promise to make famous. He heads back to the office with the new fashion magazine, however, Shadow Jazz has taken all of the credit. (A La Mode).
Back at the lab, Jazz wake up to find his experiments are gone. He switches on the news and discovers that Shadow Jazz has become a celebrity in his place. Jazz hunts down Shadow and finds him leaving a club, surrounded by fans. Shadow Jazz taunts him by taking a sip of the elixir and showing off the long rat teeth he now has. Determined, Jazz heads back to the lab where he sews a Morriss dancing outfit that he will confront Shadow in. He finds his clone in a bar surrounded by groupies and challenges him to a dance battle. Shadow flips him off but dances anyway, embarrasing Jazz as he falls and rips his trousers. (Cake/Obsolete).
Shadow stumbles through the hallways after taking another swig of the elixir, suddenly blacking out.
Waking up in a white void, Shadow now appears more rat like. The song begins abruptly as he begins to complete a series of tasks quickly and easily, including saving an old woman from a theif and impregnating a nun with consent from God himself. Despite appearing on top of the world, Shadow begins to waver, seemingly struggling with lonelieness and the need to keep one upping himself. Before he can continue reflecting, the elixir takes over and transforms him into the Hench Rat, a huge, muscular rat form that towers over the town. (Easy For Me).
A spaceship distracts him just as he is about to crush Jazz, leading him and Jazz to the window of a small house.
An alien appears in a small child's room, introducing himself as Kroeoeo and telling the child his story. Apparently, he arrived so that he could experience something it calls Fun Kitai Furai Dei (Funky Tie Friday); his home planet of Oeoeo has been destroyed in a war, and he just wants to seek out some happiness. The child gifts him his own 'Fun Kitai', giving Kroeoeo a flashback. He remembers watching his father die in the war on Oeoeo and being given a tie which transports him to earth. Now in his own tie, the alien visits an office where the famed 'fun kitai furai dei' is taking place. He spots a sad man (Fashion Victim), who sits tie-less, and offers him a tie. Back in the room, the alien finishes up his story and Jazz and Shadow -who had been watching the whole time- come to a realisation that they should not fight anymore. (Fun Kitai Furai Dei).
Back at the lab, Jazz is visited by Shadow Jazz -who is now regular size- donned in a white cloak. He flips Jazz off once again, but Jazz understands, responding with an 'ok' symbol. They interlock hands and Jazz accidentally rips Shadow's finger off. Blood begins to cover everything but both seem unfazed. Shadow then rips off his arm and hands it to Jazz, drenching him in blood. They engage in a blood fight, Shadow losing more limbs in the process. Eventually he goes to Jazz, holding his heart in his hands and touching it to Jazz's. With that, Shadow Jazz disappears and Jazz is left in a now blood-less lab, holding a human heart and understanding more about himself. (Get Your Cheek On).
